England's World Cup Campaign Off to Shaky Start

Day 4 of the World cup is about to get under way with two of the European heavyweights due in action later today. Netherlands and Italy are both in action and while neither are been tipped as winners of the tournament, they would both be expected to get out of their groups and possibly progress further.

With 8 matches having been decided over the weekend, more questions than answers have been thrown up. The main talking point is Robert Green's disastrous mistake in England's match with the USA which cost the English 2 points after he let a fairly tame shot hit off his thumb and roll agonisingly into the net. England's performance was extremely poor in my view and having listened to the pundits on English television, I actually wonder if they were watching the same game that I was watching. I don't know what the UK's policy is but it seems to be don't say anything that might cause the slightest offence to team or manager. Indeed Fabio Capello came out and said "It was a good performance. I'm sure he was a lot more vocal in the dressing room.

I had the luxury if that's the right word, of watching Irish televisions analysis after the game. One of their pundits was Graeme Souness who said he couldn't believe how badly England had played and his two colleagues, John Giles and Eamon Dunphy both agreed. On that performance for them to be classed as possible winners of the tournament is beyond belief. There was no tempo or cohesion to their play. Midfield needs to be sorted out and quick because when they come up against the better teams in the knockout stages they will be punished. The Gerrard and Lampard issue has raised its head again. Ledley King is injured again and Milner was taken off to save himself getting sent off. Their replacements, Carragher and Sean Wright-Phillips were ineffective to say the least. Carragher was skint within 5 minutes of coming on and was lucky not to give away a penalty. Wright -Phillips should have been left on the bench. Green atoned somewhat for his mistake with a good save which bounced off the post and if that had gone in it could have been disastrous because their wasn't much hope of anything going in at the other end. Rooney was isolated up front with no decent service to him and frustration building as the game went on. Heskey had a great chance but blasted the ball straight at the keeper and the all important final ball was poor all night.

Germany on the other hand, fired a warning shot to the rest of teams with a clinical display of passing and finishing that seen their mix of youth and experience romp past the Aussies 4-0. As I have said before rule the Germans out at your peril. They might not have enough to just make it all the way but they are not to be discounted. The winners and runners up from England's group and Germanys group have to play each other in the next round which could throw up that repeat of the 66 final. Only one winner on the performances shown over the weekend I'm afraid. Hopefully it's just a slow start from England and they will build slowly into the tournament, but they can't afford any slip ups. Algeria and Slovenia shouldn't cause England any problems, but then the USA didn't cause them any major problems either and they came out with a point.

Final issue is the print media in England who seem to just love when things go a little bit pear shaped. They were all over Robert Green like a rash. It seems the only thing that interests them is the big brash headline that will add a few numbers to their circulation figures. Why not just report the facts, support the team and stop trying to assassinate any one who makes a mistake. Will they round on Rooney in the same way if he misses the decisive penalty in the final? Probably, even after all he has done for the team. Remember Beckham after he got sent off against Argentina. How England could have done with his quality of passing on Saturday night.

Japan Holds on to 1-0 Victory Over an Uninspired Cameroon

Yesterday with an opportunistic goal by Honda at the 39 minute mark and a solid defense Japan managed its first world cup victory on foreign soil yet they would have to hold of a late charge from Cameroon, who came ever so close to scoring in the dying moments of the game. This coming on a shot by defender Stephane Mbia which hit the post, leaving Japanese goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima but looking on as the ball bounced of his goal's crossbar and back. Japan however despite being dominated by Cameroon in the second half also had scoring chances of their own which perhaps should have led to a second goal yet like Cameroon's later effort; so too would theirs hit the post.

Cameroon, for its part despite having internationally renowned players such as Samuel Eto'o was never able to get their game fully going. This being a case of Japan not really allowing them to get in their stride and being able to take advantage of one of the few scoring chances they did have.

As for Japan, they now have their first three points and will take on the Netherlands in their next game which should be interesting if the Japanese manage to control the Dutch attack in the same way they did with Cameroon's. Cameroon however after their first game was left without any points and will be taking on Denmark (who also lost their first encounter) in a game both teams need to win if they wish to stay in the tournament.

Goalkeeper - The Ultimate (Tragic) Hero?

3rd day into the World Cup and it seems that the goalkeepers are playing their role. On one hand you have Robert Green (England) and Faouzi Chaouchi (Algeria) who allowed really soft goals that cost their team valuable points, on the other hand you have Vincent Enyeama who saved his team from a terrible defeat when stopping Leo Messi and the Argentinian strikers time after time.

Goalkeeper is a cruel role, if a striker misses a wide open shoot nobody remembers that after the game, but if a goal keeper makes one mistake he's scarfed for life. l mean look at what the British media is doing to Green, feel bad for the guy.

In England's case, there has been a tragic Hero in every big tournament since the 1996.

1996 Euro-Gareth Siuthgate misses a penalty in the semi final against Germany

1998 World Cup- David Beckham gets a stupid red card to leave his teammates playing a man down to lose to Argentina

2002 World Cup- David Seaman helps Ronalidinho score and the English team goes home in the quarter finals

2004 Euro- David Beckham again as the tragic hero with a penalty miss against Portugal in the quarter finals.

Now we'll just have to wait and see, if Green gets another chance in goal cause unlike Algeria, England has real expectations from their team to bring in the cup back home from the first time since 1966. David Games is waiting for his chance which may come earlier then he expected.

I hope for Mr. Green that he won't become England's 2010 World Cup Tragic Hero.

De Rossi Gets Equalizer For Italy in 1-1 Draw Against Parag

It has been four years since my friends and I saw Italy win the final of the world cup against France and it has been equally long that we have been waiting to see our beloved Italy defend its title. This being something which only Brazil and Italy have managed to do and that being to repeat as world cup champions. Of course, my friends and I who watch Italy play in the Italian restaurant, San Lorenzo (located in downtown Warsaw) know this will not be an easy feat yet we are always hopeful.

It was yesterday, like we did four years ago that we gathered together to see Italy play against Paraguay yet like it was back then our enthusiasm was not so great in the first round, as we are almost certain that Italy will qualify to the second round; it being then that the tournament will truly begin. Naturally, one must never overlook the first round so with these in mind my friends and I went in small numbers to see Italy take on Paraguay yet not for the first time in a world cup. As it was back in 1950 in the world cup held in Brazil that Italy played Paraguay; whom they defeated by two goals to zero yet despite this win; did not qualify to the second round of the tournament.

As for the game, it got of with both teams battling in the midfield until Italy was able to gain control and push Paraguay back to its own end. Italy even having a very good chance which was cleared at the last second by a Paraguayan defender in the penalty box. Italy in the first half going forward though with not the same creativity that they posses when Pirlo or Totti are playing yet did so in search of what would be their first goal in the tournament. Paraguay however managed to score first when 39 minutes in to the game, defender Alcara headed the ball past Buffon to give his team a 1-0 lead. In all fairness to Buffon, it was an almost perfectly headed ball which hit of the past before ending up in net in what was Paraguay's only real scoring chance of the whole match..

Italy was trailing 1-0 and such would they go in to the half time break which brought back memories of the Italy-Ireland I saw in 94, in which they after giving up an early goal, went on to loose by 1-0. This despite pushing forward all game long yet on this occasion it was not to be the same as it was then as De Rossi, who had a very good game; equalized from close range after Paraguay goalkeeper, Villar failed to clear a cross. Naturally, as with every Italian goal, a loud roar was heard to declare that our team had scored and that we were no longer trailing. Italy, after that goal continued to press forward yet despite creating some opportunities failed to get the game winner in a game which ended at 1-1.

In conclusion I would say that though Italy did not win, this was not a bad start as we did out play and get a point against our worthy opponent, who not only qualified in South America ahead of Argentina but only got one point less than Brazil on their way to South Africa 2010. Of course when analyzing Italy's performance one must also consider the absences of both Pirlo and Gattuso; who should be back for Italy's next matches; which hopefully will see Italy progress at least as far as the semifinal.

As a footnote, Italy's Gigi Buffon became the first goalkeeper ever to be replaced at half time. This due to an injury which he, himself has claimed should not keep him out for Italy's next match on Sunday.

Us Americans Don't Understand Soccer

The 2010 FIFA World Cup, also known as "The Mondeal" in many countries, is upon us. The games began with the first match being played on Friday.

I watched the World Cup match between the USA team and the team from England.

I can honestly say that the game was not interesting at all. It was a big snoozefest. With all the hype, I thought there was a chance that us Americans got it wrong. Perhaps there is something to the sport that is really captivating, that us Americans just have not picked up on until now. I figured I would give it a chance.

I gave it a chance and found out we Americans are missing nothing by not following soccer/football. It is a great game for fitness, but a boring game for sports.

There are many benefits to following professional sports. It allows you to dream, to live vicariously through others. What kid in New York did not grow up dreaming of playing for the Yankees? What kid in Chicago did not grow up dreaming to play for the Chicago Cubs?

One of the other things that is is great about following professional sports is that it urges and motivates you to play sports as well. You want to be like Mike. You want to see if you can pull off the same move you just saw Kobe do in the game the other night. You want to see if you can shoot the 3 pointer like Ray Allen. Hit the ball as far as Albert Pujols. And to dream to do something like Daniel Nava - to hit a grand slam in your first major league pitch is the ultimate.

Professional sports lets you dream, but it also motivates you to head out to the park and play ball. To go for a run, to start weightlifting, to play some one-on-one basketball. Whatever sport you happen to prefer, you will play harder after you watch a professional match.

The problem for us Americans with the World Cup is that we don't really understand the sport. We don't understand the strategy, the framework of the game, or even the positions of the players!

The brilliant Argentinians had a difficult qualifying stretch and will be re-energized when they start play in South Africa against Nigeria. Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi, who comprehensive an amazing 61 goals between them. Starting hopeful Carlos Tevez, for his part, notched up another 22 for Manchester City.

Nigeria also struggled during the qualifying phase, although they will be hopeful head coach Lagerback can help them find again their beat. They will go into this game nervous to turn around the trend of their previous two FIFA World Cup encounters with the Argentinians, in 1994 and 2002, which saw La Albiceleste run out winners on both occasions. For This World cup South Africa is to provide two venues – Ellis Park and Soccer City .

Ellis Park

For decades Ellis Park was known as one of the world’s most recognisable rugby stadiums and the venue for well-known clashes among the South African Springboks, the All Blacks of New Zealand and the British Lions.

Now it’s ready to host the “gorgeous game”.It was formerly built in 1927-28, and June 1928 saw the first test played at the stadium beside the All Blacks.
The revamped Ellis Park Stadium
The old stadium was demolished in March 1979 to make way for a bigger, more modern capacity.

On 24 June 1995 it hosted the Rugby World Cup Final, and then President Nelson Mandela came out of the subway wearing the Number 6 jersey. South Africa won the Cup against New Zealand and Ellis Park became a symbol of a united South Africa.

Today Ellis Park is the residence ground of both Orlando Pirates Football Club and the Golden Lions Rugby franchise.

Soccer City

This fantastic venue, with its unique African calabash design, will host both the opening ceremony and the final match.
It is the 11th biggest stadium in the world with a seating capability of more than 90 000.
Also known as FNB Stadium, Soccer City was built in 1987 and had individual blue and white plastic bucket seats for 80 000 people. A two-metre wide “moat” ran around the entire field to protect players from pitch invasions by viewers.
The first football game to be played here was, appropriately

Competition : International friendly match

Brazil Vs Zimbabwe

Brazil's generally popularity could take a major dip if the five-time World Cup winner follows through on battle to play Zimbabwe in a friendly match in Harare on June 2.

At the very least, Brazilians are going to come in for some heated denigration.

Those who fight that game and politics should not mix have their head in the sand. They mix all the time. Politicians like nothing more than to be photographed with the public's sporting idols, just as players and coaches like to hobnob with national leaders. Witness the U.S. World Cup team's visit to the White House on Thursday to be wished the best of World Cup luck by President Barack Obama, with previous President Bill Clinton also labeling along.

Brazil going to play in Zimbabwe is flat-out a bad idea. The game should be scrap right now, before it causes further embarrassment for the Selecao.

Any action that gives authority to a administration as cruel and odious as that of Robert Mugabe is wrong. It is all very well for people to quarrel that the ordinary citizens of Zimbabwe deserve the chance to see the world's top-ranked team, but it is Mugabe and his partners who will reap the publicity benefits.

There is a one-word cause why no international team from outer Africa has played in Zimbabwe in the last 30 years: Mugabe. Even his ally, North Korea, recently canceled strategy to play there.

Brazil has another game on tap, aligned with Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on June 7. Nothing wrong with that. And if Brazil Coach Dunga feels his team needs some warmup games beside African opponents, there are any number of countries to choose from without resorting to Zimbabwe.

The two teams met in the group stages of this year’s competition.
